holmenkollen is this weekend. there is a lot to say about that race (
you can check out what pete and i wrote about last year's event here) but for now i'm interested in talking about the fact that it's an interval start 50km. i would love for someone out there to correct me - this is a totally unresearched statement - but i'm gonna say it's the last 50km interval start race. period. 2002 was the…

I was a DNF.
Here's the breakdown--
Conditions: Temperature -12F with winds out of the WNW, wind chill approaching -40F. Course consisting of dry, windblown snow from previous week.
Clothing: No real problems with clothing--I got this part right. Bottoms were mesh lined windpants w. silkweight longjohns. Top was light weight polypro shirt under fleece lined windbreaker, had a windbreaker vest over the top for added protection. Balaclava, Lobster mitts, and wool cap, with copious amounts of va…

This is my first entry and I'm just trying everything out. I just got back from the race in Aspen and I did pretty well, along with the rest of the team. It was one of the warmest XC races I've ever been to. Alright, I'm done typing now

This weekend I was supposed to go to the Canadian Birkie in Edmonton but because of the cold weather and wind, it has been cancalled. Right now it is too cold to even get out and ski so I will have to sit inside and get some homework done and maybe run on the treadmill. Westerns are in a week and a half and I can't get a descent workout in to save my life!

I did my first race of the season last year (my first since 2006) last weekend, the Governor's Cup 25k Freestyle race at Camp Ripley MN.
The course consists of a combination of riverflats, rolling hills, and quite a bit of heavy-duty climbing, utilizing every piece of elevation along the trail to its limits. The layout is an "out and back" from the Rec Center, to the biathlon range , and then back to the rec center. The Biathlon range, the middle 8K, contains the majority of the hard…

four races in five days is the reason i came here - a lot of opportunity for images in a short period of time. the other reason was that i wanted to see a US athlete getting a podium finish. so on that latter point it was a bit of a disappointment. it's tough, though, when you pin your podium hopes on sprints. the race doesn't necessarily go to the racer who's the fittest or the fastest. you gotta stay out of trouble and take good risks and make good decisions. there's no guarantees. that said,…

another fine day in canada, eh? cold, though. for the prelims, there was one good spot for photos, and all the photogs were there. most of them were right on the side of the course - i camped out above them on the bank so i wouldn't have to deal with people in my shot. even so, someone walked in front of me when cook went by. i was really happy with my photos from the prelims except for the fact that i completely missed laura valaas. f.
for the men, double-poling was where it was at. i…

Here's what I have been able to piece together about the Gov Cup Trail. Route is out and back with a loop through the biathlon area. The biathlon loop represents the most difficult terrain and is 8k in length. The easiest terrain is the 3k along the river (the first 3k, and the last 3k)
Here's how I see it:
1-3: Mostly flats to the range gate
3-9: Moderate terrain on the Viking Trail
9-17: Biathlon Loop (bleah! 8k of climbing)
17-22: Moderate terrain back towards ca…

I really like the "all in one" idea behind this new HQ for XC. All ages, all styles, all keeping in touch.
I'll chime in as an advocate of all-rounder skiing. I do what I call rando skiing every day. I ski a bunch of local self-skied-in trails. I use a ski-racing classic technique but I use wider skis and I just love exploring all sorts of trails and places. It's free, it's nearby (when I want to go close), it's anywhere I want to go. Occasionally on weekends I'll meet up with people an…

beautiful day for racing, and not a bad day to spectate or take photos, either.
i don't have much to say about the races or the racers...i don't really see it happen except as color and form and composition through the viewfinder. i think it must have been a tough course. i saw some athletes blow up like i have never seen WC athletes blow up. also, i didn't feel like the speed was particularly high. like i said, though, when i'm in photo mode i don't pay as much attention to the race as…

It was a weekend for the books---the coldest weather that we have had so far this season. Highs yesterday topped out at -5, and today we hit +5. Since racing starts next week, getting out this weekend was pretty important as it would be some of the last major workouts I would be able to do prior to the Governor's Cup.
Destination was key yesterday. Battle Creek/Winthrop was in the cards. The trail has a nice selection of hills, but more importantly, is mostly out of the wind with…

it was a bit of a shock going from 80 deg F to -10 deg F, and my crocs probably aren't going to cut it as winter footwear, but i'm surviving.
i spent my time today walking the courses for tomorrow's pursuit races to find my shooting locations. it was cloudy, so i don't have a very good idea of how the light and shadows will feature if the sun is out tomorrow. i have two spots for classic and three spots for skating, though it always can change last minute depending on light, tv camera p…

so yesterday I was supposed to go to a 30 km Classic loppet in Prince Albert but it ended up being too cold and was canceled. my coach decided that we should get in a long hard ski anyway so I trudged over to the local golf course and did a 30 km classic there. We went in the afternoon where it reached a balmy high of 18 degrees and that combined with the fresh snow meant that it took me over 2 hours to complete the 30 km.
Now that would have made the whole thing hard enough but we have ver…

I often wonder how I can function at night after a hard race. Tonight is one of those nights, and although I got up at 5, my body doesn't want to relax and turn off. It's an outlandish and slightly zany feeling, and if I ever decide to practice Zen Buddhism these odd moments will coincide nicely with my studies. So, instead of trying to rest, I decided to research why, after a race, I can't seem to fall asleep for the life of me -- here's what I found.
"It’s Monday morning, and you’re…

I was able to get back out onto the lake yesterday for about an hour. I had forgotten what a grind lake skiing is. It didn't help that the temp was about 5 degrees and the snow was nice and slow. Fortunately the wind was minimal so once I got moving and warmed up things weren't too bad. I'm starting to see some other signs of use out there as well. I saw a skater out on the lake when I was coming back from the office, and there was a classic skier sharing the lake with me during my laps.…

I started skiing my freshmen year in High school and skied on the CVU States Team and got top 20 for both Skate (Trapps) and Classic (Jay Peak) D1. My freshmen year I also barely made the VT J2 team (only after others dropped out to go to JO’s) and got rocked at Rumford finishing close to last in every race.
My sophomore year I ran Varsity on th…

Skied a local park 0.7mi from my home. It ts a beautiful area with pines that lay a soft layer of needles and has a wonderful sand dune, oak trees, flats and hills. It was actually the first time I skied there. There are numerous dogs running loose at times (even though there are 2 very visible signs that say "dogs must be on leashes".) That can be very frustrating at times, especially while running on the trail (have been slobbered on by other peoples dogs..ech.) But not necessarily today, the…

i'm off to canmore (after a couple days in minneapolis) to take photos at the world cup. i have a 12-hour layover in amsterdam and a 12-hour layover in jfk, making the trip to mpls 44 hours door to door when it's usually 21. my flight departs kampala at 10:55pm so i'll have been up all day before i leave. i arrive mpls at 10:15am and in the interest of avoiding jetlag, it's a good idea to not sleep until that night. so chances are that the only sleep ill be getting for the next 60+ hours is on t…

Here's the hard thing about skiing, sometimes you train well and everything seems to be going well, and you still have a bad race. I had that this weekend, it was the first race of my college career and I was pretty excited, I had a really good week of training coming in and I felt like I was going to be able to post a good result. It was a mass start on some really narrow trails and we had talked as a team about the importance of getting in good position before we headed into the woods, so I to…

Many of you reading this blog probably do not know who I am, if you do you probably do not know much about me as I am still a new guy to the ski community. First off my last name, Krankkala is of Finnish descent. That's right I am half Finnish with my other half being Norwegian this makes me a 100% Scandinavian. I believe this Scandanavian ancestry is the reason for my draw to this sport.
For now I am going to start with how I started cross country skiing. During the summer after my sop…
